How to Avoid Diabetes
The definition of diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. More than 24 million Americans have diabetes and about 6 million do not know they have the disease.
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure among adults. It causes mild to severe nerve damage leading to circulation problems, sometimes resulting the loss of a leg or foot. Diabetes significantly increases the risk of heart disease and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. The disease responsible for almost 70,000 deaths each year and the numbers continue to increase every year.
The Two Major types of Diabetes are Type 1 and Type 2:
Type 1 Diabetes
The immune system attacks the pancreas and destroys the cells that make insulin.
Type 2 Diabetes
The pancreas can still make insulin, but the body does not respond to it properly. Unfortunately Type 1 cannot be prevented but the good news is that there are ways to prevent Type 2 diabetes.
Tips to Avoid Diabetes:
Getting physical activity will help you lose weight, lower your blood sugar and boost sensitivity to insulin.
Getting plenty of fiber lowers your risk of heart disease, improves your blood sugar and promotes weight loss.
Limit Sugary Foods and Beverages
Consuming a lot of sugar filled foods and beverages like sodas, juices, and iced teas also can lead to excessive weight gain.
Pack your diet with whole grains, fruits and vegetables to help maintain your blood sugar and body weight.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
If you are overweight, the chances of getting Type 2 diabetes are higher. Losing excess weight will help control this. The key to preventing Type 2 diabetes is to stay lean and stay active.
