A recent study published in The Journal of Physiology had young male subjects eat 30% more calories and 50% more fat than they had before. The 28 males were divided into two groups, with one group hardly exercising while the others worked out daily. Of those exercising, half did so in the morning while the other half did the same workout after consuming a high-carbohydrate breakfast.

The results showed, not surprisingly, that the participants who hadn’t exercised had packed on weight. As for the people who did workouts before breakfast, they hadn’t gained any weight. The ones who exercised after breakfast, on the other hand, gained weight, although it was half of what the non-exercisers gained (an average of 3 pounds rather than 6 pounds).

If your workout is in the morning, the reality is that you’re more likely to stick to it. Make it part of your routine. Plus, you won’t be able to talk yourself out of an evening workout if you already did your exercise when you woke up. Another reason the best time to exercise is in the a.m. is that your blood sugar levels are low, which forces the body to look for energy sources, taking fat from the reserves to use as fuel.
