While you may only think of your nails when you’re ready for that new fresh coat of paint, doctors say that the problems you have with your nails could possibly tell you more about your health than you realize. So instead of just ignoring those signs that you think are nothing, check out why your nails might be problematic before you get another manicure. Here are two common problems that many people face – and what it says about your health.
Brittle or Dry Nails
One of the most common nail problems people face is brittle or dry nails. There are a variety of reasons this could be happening to your nails, but one of the most common reasons is because of washing dishes or cleaning without gloves. Your nails can also become dry and brittle from overuse of nail polish remover – something that manicure addicts know about all too well.
While this issue may seem unproblematic, there could be an underlying reason for your brittle nails. If this is a consistent problem, you might want to speak to your doctor. Hypothyroidism causes this side effect as well, and it won’t hurt to make sure you’re healthy.
Yellow nails are the second most common nail problem that people face – and this could be another false alarm, just like brittle nails could be. Your nails age naturally, causing a yellowish hue to appear on your nails. This yellowish color could also appear if you consistently are wearing acrylics or always paint your nails.
These problems aren’t necessarily health issues. However, if you smoke, your nails can become stained and then, therefore, become yellow.
Whether you have dry, brittle, or yellow nails, it would be best to lay off getting manicures or painting your nails until these problems go away. If you see a consistent problem with your nails, it never hurts to ask a doctor about his or her opinion in order to keep yourself as healthy as possible.
